Introduction

Piping down the valleys wild,
Piping songs of pleasant glee,
On a cloud I saw a child,
And he laughing said to me.

“Pipe a song about a Lamb!;
So I piped with merry chear.
“Piper pipe that song again;”
So I piped: he wept to hear.

“Drop thy pipe, thy happy pipe;
Sing thy songs of happy chear:”
So I sung the same again,
While he wept with joy to hear.

“Piper, sit thee down and write
In a book that all may read.”
So he vanishʼd from my sight,
And I pluckʼd a hollow reed,

And I made a rural pen,
And I stainʼd the water clear,
And I wrote my happy songs
Every child may joy to hear.

The shepherd

How sweet is the Shepherdʼs sweet lot!,
From the morn to the evening he strays;
He shall follow his sheep all the day,
And his tongue shall be filled with praise.

For he hears the lambʼs innocent call,
And he hears the eweʼs tender reply;
He is watchful while they are in peace,
For they know when their Shepherd is nigh.

Introducción

Con mi flauta por los valles,
Y tocando alegres aires,
Vi a un niño en una nube,
Que sonriendo me pedía:
“¡Toca acerca de un Cordero!”
Yo toqué con alegría.
“Flautista, toca esa canción”;
Yo toqué: lloró al oirla.
“Deja tu jovial flautín,
Canta tus felices cantos”.
Así los canté otra vez
Y él lloraba de alborozo.
“Flautista, siéntate y escribe,
Donde puedan leerlo todos”.
Se esfumó así ante mis ojos,
Y tomé una caña hueca,
Hice una rústica pluma,
Y el agua clara teñí,
Felices cantos compuse
Que todos gocen oirlos.

El pastor

¡Que dulce es la dulce suerte del pastor!
Del alba hasta el ocaso vaga;
Seguirá sus rebaños todo el día
Y poblará su lengua de alabanzas.
Pues escucha el llamado inocente del cordero
Y la tierna respuesta de la oveja;
Él los vigila mientras ellos van en paz,
Pues saben cuando su Pastor está cerca.
